Erectile Dysfunction or impotence is a common problem among men which presents with consistent inability to sustain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse . Impotence can vary. It can involve a total inability to achieve an erection or ejaculation, an inconsistent ability to do so, or a tendency to sustain only very brief erections.

Age is a risk factor for erectlile dysfunction. Many studies have shown that it is much more likely in a 60 year old as compared with a 40 year old man. Men who lead less healthy lifestyles, eat a less healthy diet, drink more and exercise less are also more prone to suffer from this. Physical exercise tends to lessen the risk of impotence.

Impotence is treatable at any age. There are now successful treatments for this disorder which ensures that most men with the problem return to normal sexual activity
Causes of Erectile dysfunction can vary with age
Young and inexperienced men
Anxiety is the most frequent cause- nervousness about having sex, about causing a pregnancy, or about using a condom. Using a condom can be difficult at this age as the time spent in putting on a condom may make them lose their erection because of anxiety.
Middle age
Commonest causes at this age are lifestyle problems like stress, work life imbalance, unhealthy diet and lack of exercise and its associated illnesses like hypertension.

Diabetic men are much more likely to suffer from ED.
Older men
Increasing age damages blood vessels that carry blood to the brain, heart and penis. Therefore, as older men are more prone to heart attacks and strokes, they are also more to ED. Healthy diet and exercise that keep men cardiovascularly fit also protects against ED. So it is possible for a 70 year old man to be sexually active.
